There was a time in my life when I performed daily, magical, and spiritual rituals.
I look back on that time with wonder, with longing and with a tinge of sadness that I have now become so busy that I must plan far in advance to schedule in a ritual. How did this happen, I ask while staring at the piles of post-its on my desk, the stacks of books to read and research and the long list of projects for my soon to be released book...and all of the notes for my next book. How did I wind up without a single ritual to perform...where has my magic mojo gone?
My theory is that I have temporarily fallen out of synch with the moon. This theory may surprise you, as The Goddess Almanac is all about the moon, and I am a moonologist after all...but it sometimes happens that when we study, research and teach something too intensely, using only our conscious mind and our earthly eyes, we often loose touch with its essence and subtle magic, which can only be experienced by our subconscious mind, the expansiveness of our soul, and the tenderness of our heart.
Matters of Spirit, magic and the ethereal are best viewed with our inner, spirit eyes, and understood by the part of us that is not earthly, not of this world and not based in ordinary reality. To really experience these things - to really experience ritual, we must elevate our gaze...look upwards and see beyond what is right in front of us.
And so, one night last week, while in my garden late at night, I looked up. And there, way up above, and beyond the graceful branches of a pink pepper tree was the moon. She seemed especially bright, especially shining and very magical to me in that moment. And I realized that I had been missing her. I have missed just looking at her, and simply being shined on by her. So I stood there in the moonlight and breathed her light in. It felt good, right and familiar.
I have discovered that the most profound rituals are the simplest, and I recognized that in that moment of standing there under the moon that I had just performed one of the oldest and most sacred of all lunar rituals, that of standing quietly in the light of the moon.
The next day, I awoke craving more ritual, and so in the coolness of the early morning I burned copal resin, bathing in its smoke until my skin was literally perfumed by its scent, and I performed blessings, and I prayed, and I reveled in my spontaneity, and in the joy of performing a sacred act. You can read more about my return to ritual here.
Life is always changing, always phasing and always showing itself anew, and if you, the goddess on earth, align with the ever changing light and essence of the moon - she will always bring you back to life's rhythms, back to magic, back to yourself...and back to The Goddess.
The moon has been quite busy with her own rituals; last night was the last total lunar eclipse for 2015, and today's full moon carries a very special aspect - and opportunity for ritual, which is that of the 'Super Moon'. A super moon is whenever the moon is at 'perigee', or whenever it is at its closest distance to the earth in any given month. Today's full, super moon is one of three that we will be experiencing this year. If you feel you need more time to work with this moon, take heart, as you can work with any phase of the moon for three days; the day before the phase is a building up of power, the day of the phase is the most powerful and the day after is the when this power is still present - but fading.
Full moons can feel very challenging, and very magical. During a full moon the sun is shining fully upon its surface, and so we receive the most balanced blend of solar/masculine and lunar/feminine essence as it is filtered down to us through lunar light. This offers opportunities to work with both your egoic/worldly/masculine and your emotional/inner/feminine during your lunar rituals.
This super moon occurs while in the house of Pisces, whose elemental essence is that of water, and therefore the emotions. Also associated with the dreamspace, the imaginal realms, the deep subconscious and the spirit world, Pisces is one of the most sensitive and spiritually inclined of all the zodiac signs. Keeping all of this in mind for your own lunar rituals, you can ride the waves of Pisces' watery, sensitive nature deep into your own sensitivities, dreams and subconscious.
When was the last time that you performed a ritual? If you are like me, and can't seem to fit it in - or want to bring in even more ritual...I hope to inspire you with the following ideas for simple, modern, magical goddess rituals - all having to do with the waning (decreasing) moons that we will be experiencing until the 14th, when the new moon emerges, signaling the beginning of the waxing (increasing) phases.

LUNAR ASPECTS Waning moons are for letting go, and releasing anything from your life that no longer serves you. Set an intention during this super full moon to make a change that you have been longing for. Notice what adjustments you may need to make in order to fulfill this intention. Write your intentions on a piece of paper, hold it close to your heart, then burn it in a silver or white candle and scatter the ashes (safely!) on the wind, or into the earth.
LUNAR GODDESS Work with Kali Ma, a Hindu 'dark mother' goddess of creation, preservation, destruction and change during the waning moons. Kali's dark, warrioress nature symbolizes the birth-death-rebirth cycle, and she is both the creatress and the destructress of life. You will need her strong, powerful destructive essence to break down the old paradigms during this super moon, and her loving, nurturing essence to pave the way for new ones.
LUNAR MAGIC rituals during the waning moons should be centered around releasing, letting go, winding down, completion and eventually total stillness. I especially like to perform water magic during this time - and its perfectly aligned for the watery/emotional Pisces influence we will be experiencing...many of my waning rituals involve sacred bathing with incense, candles and scented oils.
LUNAR HERBS & OILS for waning moon rituals should be calming and mysterious in nature. I like to use those derived from roots or night blooming florals such as the exquisitely feminine and narcotically sweet jasmine, ylang ylang and evening primrose, along with the earthy scented vetiver and spikenard root.
LUNAR BUSINESS rituals during the waning moons should be directed towards letting go of bad business habits, fears, doubts and anything about your business, career or livelihood that is simply not a fit, such as a business partner, a location or a behavior.
LUNAR BEAUTY rituals during the waning moons are about detoxing the body, and how perfectly aligned is this with our Pisces influence, as this sign governs the lymphatic system. For a luxurious, deep, inner beauty treatment use jojoba oil mixed with a few drops of bergamot and rose geranium (1/2 oz./15 ml jojoba, 3 drops each of the essential oils). Pour a bit of the oil on your palm and dip the bristles of dry brush (buy one here) into the mixture and then brush your skin just before stepping into a bath or shower.
LUNAR LOVE rituals during the waning moons are about letting go of unserving relationships, fears around intimacy, doubts of worthiness and anything standing in your way of love, be it mental, physical, emotional or spiritual. While this is not a time to ask for love, it is a time for releasing blockages that prevent you from receiving love.
LUNAR CREATIVITY rituals during the waning moons are about completion, resting the creative muscle and replenishing your energy so that you will be ready to go during the creative surge once the moon is new.
LUNAR ABUNDANCE rituals during the waning moons are about letting go and decreasing, so this is not a time to ask for 'more', but rather a time to ask for your mental and emotional blocks around abundance to be released, and to let go of fear and doubt.
LUNAR DREAMING during the waning moons can be very dark, deeply thoughtful, mysterious and mystic in nature. Always remember to keep a dream journal nearby for recording your dreams, as much information can come through at this time - especially information that you may not understand now, but can reference later for deeper meaning and understanding.
LUNAR AFFIRMATION Flowing and moving like water, I allow my emotions, my thoughts and my feelings to surface, to go deep and to become still. I flow from Source and move with grace and ease through all situations. I release all that prevents me from flowing like a river to the ocean. I am free, I am free, I am free.
YOUR GODDESS MOON is the moon under which you were born. If you were born under a full moon, you may be very drawn to being in relationships, partnerships and seek community above all. You may find that you are also drawn to the drama of relationships as well, and find yourself in the middle of conflict and drama more often than not. This is an indication of powerful karmic work for you to accomplish, as you are meant to learn about harmony and how to have successful relationships, too. If this is your Goddess Moon (you can order your Goddess Moon forecast here), know that this is your time of power. All that you are doing during this phase is amplified and accentuated.
